Coming soon to a theatre near you…

With the news that Warner Bros is finally making some progress making the Septimus Heap movies, I just thought I’d comb through some of the info about other upcoming movies from teen books (that aren’t, you know, New Moon)…

A Great and Terrible Beauty: If they don’t get moving on this, the momentum is going to fade away. Right now it’s listed as a 2010 release – which is a shame, because the last book of the trilogy came out almost two years ago now. A lot of those teens who adored this book are moving on to other obsessions (Twilight, Mortal Instruments, House of Night, to name a few), & this movie will need those obsessive fangirls to help it along.

The Lovely Bones: Peter Jackson is directing this! It’ll be interesting to see how this’ll turn out – it’s due in theatres December 11th, & there’s quite an interesting cast attached to it. This was an Alex award winner, & a literary bestseller, so it’ll be interesting to see which teens get into the movie.

Tunnels: It’s listed as “in development” & has a release date of 2010, but that’s it.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief: This series launches next February 12, with Chris Columbus at the helm – which I’m wary about. He’s credited with bringing together that amazing cast that’s made the Harry Potter franchise into great movies, but frankly, I like to pretend those first two movies don’t exist. That being said, the first teaser trailer debuted before Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince, & it definitely looked good. I need to snatch a copy of these books before they hit the (even bigger) time – I’ve yet to read them!

Cirque du Freak: This was recently renamed to The Vampire’s Assistant (presumably to capture a wider audience), which is actually the title of the second book of this popular series. The people involved in this production seem committed; Brian Hedgeland, who wrote & directed A Knight’s Tale helped with the screenplay, & the director, Paul Weitz, has been involved in a number of successful teen movies. This should be showing up October 23, but there’s still no poster or trailer available!

Beastly: There’s quite a mish-mash of actors cast so far – Vanessa Hudgens, Neil Patrick Harris, & Mary-Kate Olsen are the big names attached. It’s due to be released July 30, 2010. It’s really interesting to see which books they’re doing, & which they completely ignore. Wouldn’t Looking for Alaska make a fabulous teen movie? & what about Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian?

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: I feel so out of the loop on this one – it’s so popular elsewhere, but teens around here pretty much couldn’t care less about it. It’s due next April.

Derby Girl, AKA Whip It!: Everyone is crazy excited about this one, thanks to Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut & the cast that’s been attached to it. In addition to Barrymore, Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, & Jimmy Fallon are listed. Although Shauna Cross, the author of the original teen novel, is credited for the screenplay, I do wonder if this will grow out of it’s teen lit origins.

Artemis Fowl & Tithe movies seem to have fallen off the face of the earth. Every now & again I’ll hear something new, but there are no longer IMDB pages for those films. When last I heard, Ender’s Game was in that “it could still happen!” phase – honestly, I think it’d be too hard to find a child who looks believably young enough that could still pull it off.

Any other movies you know about?
